MSI's Project Zero Motherboards to Feature CAMM2 DDR5 Memory

MSI is introducing its next generation of Project Zero motherboards, featuring the new CAMM2 DDR5 memory. This development is set to improve performance and provide greater flexibility for PC builders and enthusiasts.

What is CAMM2 DDR5 Memory?

CAMM2 stands for Compression Attached Memory Module. This innovative memory standard aims to replace the traditional SO-DIMM memory used in laptops. The main advantage of CAMM2 is its ability to combine a dual-channel configuration into a single module, saving space in the Z dimension, which is beneficial for thin form factors.

Benefits of CAMM2 in Desktops

Implementing CAMM2 memory in desktops can offer several advantages. It eliminates RAM compatibility issues with large CPU coolers and allows for creative use of space above the module, possibly for additional cooling solutions or aesthetic enhancements like RGB lighting.

CAMM2’s optimized trace layout is expected to support the increasing speeds of DDR5 memory, potentially reaching the 10,000 MT/s mark. This new standard might also facilitate the use of LPDDR5X, which exceeds the limitations of traditional SO-DIMMs. Additionally, CAMM2 could allow laptops and desktops to use interchangeable RAM, providing a seamless upgrade path between devices.

Uncertainties and Upcoming Developments

Despite its promising features, there are still many unknowns about CAMM2’s performance in desktop environments. Details such as speed, timings, capacity, power consumption, and cost compared to traditional DDR5 kits are yet to be disclosed. These questions are expected to be answered at Computex, where more information about this innovative memory technology will be revealed.
