MyDigitalSSD BP5e M.2 2280 480GB Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

At the time of writing, the MyDigitalSSD hasn’t made it to Europe yet, but US readers can get this great BP5e M.2 2280 480GB drive at Amazon for just $129.99 or directly through MyDigitalDiscount for just $121.87.

Conclusion

When I reviewed the 2.5-inch counterpart of the MyDigitalSSD Bullet Proof 5 Eco a few months back, I was impressed with its performance for a TLC-based drive and it taught us that this kind of drives shouldn’t be avoided. Today’s review of the M.2 version impressed me even more and we once again stand here with an amazing product from MyDigitalSSD.

There isn’t much arguing with the performance of this drive, especially not when we put it up against such strong competition as I did in the comparison charts. The reason is two-fold here, for once these are the M.2 SATA-based drives we have tested thus far and second, the BP5e M.2 drive can easily compete with them in most areas. That alone shows us how great the drive is. With a sequential performance of 565MB/s reading and 540MB/s writing, we go above what we see on the native SATA3 port – not by much, but we do go above.

The random performance is something a lot might worry about with the TLC-based drive, but we saw up to 82K IOPS in our read tests and over 100K IOPS in the write tests. The only small downside is when copying a lot of data to the drive at once, and with a lot I mean 8GB or more. The performance will drop after that due to the caching mechanism being full which is a normal behavior for TLC. The drive still performs better than most in this area and you get around 200MB/s continuous throughput.

The BP5e barely consumes any power, you save yourself the SATA data and power cable in your system, and you get a better than SATA3 performance, so there isn’t really much to argue about. It has all the features you’ll want, a great Phison S10 SSD controller, and Toshiba TLC NAND. And all that at an impressively low price of just $0.25 per GB.

Pros

  • Impressive performance to price ratio
  • High transfer rates and throughput
  • Compact and energy efficient
  • Perfect for all M.2 SATA-based systems

Cons

  • EU availability

“If someone would ask me what SATA-based M.2 drive to get as an upgrade, I’d reply with the MyDigitalSSD BP5e M.2 drive without hesitation.”
