Bandai Namco unveiled the next installment of their weapon-based fighting game series during the Video Game awards. Soul Calibur VI is coming to PC via Steam and the PS4 as well as Xbox consoles in 2018. It marks almost 20 years since the game originally came out on the arcades back in 1998. It eventually made its way to SEGA’s Dreamcast console and became one of that platform’s most popular games. The gap between Soul Calibur V and VI is sizable as well, since the last game came out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012.
The trailer features combat with two of the game’s mainstays: the Samurai Mitsurugi and the Athenian warrior Sophitia. The developers say that the game is a return to the roots of the original and takes place in the 16th century. However the trailer also shows something new and interesting. The characters can be seen doing a revenge type counter move after blocking a succession of moves. This could be a new revision in the gameplay mechanic.
Other than Mitsurugi and Sophitia, the trailer also alludes to Nightmare, Xinghua and Kilik coming back. Watch the trailer below and see if you can spot hints of other characters.
