NAND prices to drop next year says Kingston

NAND flash are expect to have a price drop next year which will obviously create a lower price for SSDs, finally!

Coming from Kingston’s flash memory sales director Nathan Su, this news certainly brings joy to those of us craving for the SSD speeds for our system. Su went one saying:

“Average pricing for 1GB of NAND flash memory will likely fall to US$1 – a threshold that will trigger a meaningful replacement of hard disk drives (HDDs) by SSDs – sometime in the third quarter of 2012.”

Behind this lowering of the GB cost are the major flash chipmaker’s transition to 19nm and more advanced manufacturing processes. The previous manufacturing was the main cause for the high prices of SSDs, which in return slowed the adoption of the latter.

Another factor is the floods in Thailand that will most probably create a higher demand of SSDs, which could see the result of another price drop, at which point we will be expecting the SSDs to give HDDs a run for their money.

This is also going to favour Kingston, since the beginning of 2011 they have been focusing on the NAND product due to the shrinking business of the DRAM modules.

One thing is sure, we can’t wait for the price to drop so we can go shopping!
