Conclusion
Migrating from one Synology NAS to another is a breeze, no matter if you go from one bay or two bays to more and while the options between the two variate a bit, it is doable even for novice users. There are a few things to keep in mind such as drive size, volume type, and copy methods – but in the end, the result is the same.
While we can’t use the direct migrate option from the one-bay system, we can copy our files over the network or we can take out the original drive and connect it through an external enclosure. This method will take a little more time, but in a way it is the safest method as you’re in full control of what goes where. We can still export and import all our settings through the Control Panel, so there’s nothing that we can’t copy.
Moving from a multi-bay to another multi-bay unit is a lot simpler as we simply can plug in the old drives to the new NAS and choose the migrate option when it boots up. This way we don’t need to export anything and we can expand the volume to include more drives once the migration is completed.
For more information about the individual NAS’ used in this guide, we got the full review of both the DS116 and the DS916+ available for you.
I hope you enjoyed the little guide on migration and found it useful. We will have more of similar kind articles in the future.
