Netflix Finally Killing off its DVD-by-mail Service After 25 Years

Some of you may remember when Netflix was founded as a DVD-by-mail subscription service which surprisingly despite the success of its streaming platform, is still running this DVD-by-mail service but not for much longer.

Netflix To Kill Off DVD-By-Mail Service

Back in 1997, before my time unfortunately, Netflix was founded with its DVD-by-mail service which offered an alternative to going to video rental stores such as the long-deceased Blockbuster. Despite the launch of Netflix’s streaming service in 2007, they continued their DVD-by-mail service which will be seeing its closure on September 29th 2023.

End of An Era

In its lifetime the service shipped out over 5 Billion red envelopes and is impressive it has survived this long with the existence of streaming services. For those who still use this service, Netflix has provided a FAQ to answer any questions surrounding your subscription.

Netflix To Begin Password Sharing Crackdown

In other news from the streaming giant, the ban on password sharing that the company has been planning is almost in place following a report from the BBC. Supposedly Netflix plans to begin the ban on password sharing in the US and other countries by the end of July and have also come up with “opportunities to improve the experience for members”. Users with the standard or premium plans will be able to pay to share a password with up to two extra people outside their household, Netflix hasn’t revealed how much this will cost but I imagine it will be cheaper than buying individual subscriptions to make sense.

Are you surprised that the DVD-by-mail service was still running? Let us know in the comments.
