Netflix Introduces ISP Speed Index

When it comes to the question of “who is the best ISP for streaming content to my device?”, generally everyone looks to who has the fastest connection. But when it comes to directly comparing each ISP on a fair playing ground, it has until now not been a game of two halves.

Media streaming service Netflix has been over time gathering data from all of its users and with an extensive data set, they can now start to make charts to show who really is the best. With over 1 billion hours of TV and film streamed by over 33 million global users, its safe to say that Netflix have got a fair data set to work with. Results are available for each country and show a month on month change as well who are the best to chose if if all you want is to stream from them

The chart above gives us the UK rankings and not surprisingly Virgin is at the top of the rankings with O2 and BT battling it out just behind. At the bottom of the UK chart we find Everything Everywhere (EE) which is a surprise given their reportedly fast streaming capability on the UK’s only true 4G network. What we also see though is that having super fast broadband is not necessarily a sign that you’ll have a better streaming experience as Netflix can only stream at a given rate and when looking at the US charts, Google’s fiber service is not the far ahead of what Virgin are able to giving here in the UK.

The charts are going to be updated each month and for now, the results only go back to November, but as time goes on we should see a more definitive set of results across the board. If you want to check out the results for your country, head over to the Netflix ISP Speed Index, where you can see the best and worst for your region.
