It might surprise some, but Netflix isn’t actually available on the Nintendo Switch. This is particularly surprising when you consider that it is (to the last of my knowledge) available on the older Wii-U.
Initially, it was thought that the Nintendo Switch would include access to major video streaming portals such as Netflix and Hulu. Upon launch and even 6 months after, however, neither had materialized.
It should be noted that Hulu did finally appear for the Switch in November. Netflix, however, remains notable conspicuous from the apps available on the console.
This has led many to believe that Netflix was not going to bother launching on the console and the latest news isn’t entirely fantastic, but hopes should perhaps be raised a little. Not too much, however.
In a report via Business Insider, Netflix has confirmed that there are still no imminent plans to bring the streaming service to the Nintendo Switch. They have, however, gone as far to say that plans for a release are still a possibility.
Perhaps though, the keywords to take from Netflix is that there is categorically “no plans” to release on the Switch. While that doesn’t mean its impossible, it doesn’t sound too promising either.
As above, given that Netflix is already included on the Wii-U, most, including myself, would have thought that a Nintendo Switch release was a mere formality. Unfortunately, I am unable to ascertain why it isn’t on the Switch as of yet. Best speculation would suggest that either Netflix cannot be bothered or they cannot make a deal with Nintendo.
Although I can not recall exactly where I heard it, I do recall hearing once that Netflix wasn’t particularly fond of its service on the Wii-U. Specifically because of something to do with the low quality feeds necessary to work on the console. More specifically I believe was the handheld aspect. I could be wrong and apologize if I am.
For the Switch, however, this might make some sense. Specifically when you consider that the mini screen and TV output at different resolutions.
Either way, Switch owners, don’t hold your breath for Netflix. It seems that its arrival on the console is still as far away as ever.
