On Tuesday Netflix announced at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, that by the end of summer they plan to enable a new feature which would allow users to have multiple profiles. These new profiles will allow the different users on the account to specify which movies they like, as well as keeping their own instant queue. This new profile feature should allow many users who share their account with family members or roommates to keep their movie preferences separate, so that you won’t have your queue, or even movie recommendations confused with other user’s history.
If you’re like me, you let your kids, perhaps even your wife watch television shows and movies on your Netflix account. Unfortunately when you let others watch on your account they may watch something that you clearly are not interested in, for me it is the children’s shows, like Garfield. No matter how many times I click not interested in children’s shows, they still keep getting recommended to me. Though I will likely need to wait until August or perhaps a little longer, this is a feature that I am looking forward to.
Netflix has been working to bring users personalized profiles for quite awhile now, but this is the first time that I have heard anything about a release timeframe. According to Yahoo, it appears that there will be 5 or 6 animated avatars, with the ability to have at least 4 different profiles. This new feature will change my viewing experience a lot more than the sharing of which movies I have watched to Facebook, which I have refused to activate. What are your feelings on Netflix adding new features to their service? Let me know in the comments below.
