Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher Saga is soon heading to NetFlix as a TV series. The famous Polish fantasy franchise started out as New York Times best-selling novels and adapted into a massively successful video game by CD-Projekt RED.
Despite this success, the author has expressed a dislike for the video game series. Of course, this is likely because he does not make money from its continued success. He opted for a larger initial payment at the beginning in exchange for full rights.
The NetFlix adaptation of The Witcher Saga is going to be different. Sapkowski himself will be present as creative consultant, maintaining some creative control over the translation of the story. News of The Witcher saga movie adaption circulated last year. However, a more fleshed-out TV series is now the more attractive option.
Of course, this is not the first time The Witcher hit the small screen. In 2001, it released on Polish television as Wiedźmin (The Hexer) to mixed reviews. The new NetFlix adaptation is by Sean Daniel and Jason Brown, Executive Producers of SyFy’s The Expanse.
We don’t know, although clues point toward the latter. The press release announcing the adaptation, for example, is from Platige Image, the company responsible for The Witcher video game animated intros.
The rest of the executive producers for the NetFlix adaptation also have experience in CG animation. Of course, this also includes Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko; they both created the BAFTA award winning short film The Fallen Art (2004). The CG animated approach will also be more cost-effective than shooting live action.
