LAN / WiFi Bandwidth

LAN Speed Test was designed from the ground up to be a simple but powerful tool for measuring file transfer, hard drive, USB Drive, and Local Area Network (LAN) speeds (wired & wireless). It does this by building a file in memory, then transfers it both ways (without effects of windows file caching) while keeping track of the time, and then does the calculations for you. Simple concept and easy to use.

In both test environments, it’s clear that the 5GHz 802.11AC bandwidth is considerably more than 2.4GHz 802.11n – as we would expect it to be. We can also see that whilst the bandwidth experienced through solid brick walls is lower at a long-range, the bandwidth that is available is still pretty good. This not only shows the benefits of the new 802.11ac standard, but also the Beamforming+ technology which gives more direct and reliable connections.

Internet Bandwidth

Speedtest.net is a free broadband connection analysis website founded by Ookla Net Metrics in 2006. Users can test their internet speed against hundreds of geographically dispersed servers around the world. At the end of each test, users are presented with their download (the speed of data from the server to your computer) and upload (the speed of sending data from your computer to the server) bandwidth speeds. The tests are performed completely within your web browser over HTTP (just like normal web browsing).

When looking closer at something that everyone can easily relate to – internet speeds, we can see that having more modern plasterboard walls is ideal for keeping the internet speed at a distance near to that of a close range connection. Obviously having a fibre connection and hollow walls is going to be the best combination that one can get, but even with solid brick walls, at a fair distance the speeds that we have seen are some of the best yet.
