AMD is reportedly working on a new GPU, which as far as rumours go is very certain to be true, because if a GPU manufacturer wasn’t making new cards, they’re not doing their job. This new card is said to be a single-GPU device, looking set to compete with what Nvidia are offering on the GeForce GTX 780 Ti and perhaps even the GTX Titan Black, which is fundamentally similar to the GTX 780 Ti.
Using new technologies such as HMB (high-bandwidth memory) stacking techniques of multiple DRAM dies, which use dedicated memory paths into a single package; in semi-layman’s terms that is similar to using RAID1 to improve hard drive performance. The new memory structure should also cut down on power draw, thermals and save space on the PCB.
The new memory isn’t likely to give AMD the boost they need to compete with Nvidia on this front, memory clocks will likely be able to clock higher, but this often doesn’t bring the biggest performance gains, so AMD will need to offer more GPU performance, higher clock speeds and basically a good lump of raw GPU power. Personally I think this is great as it may get some of the high-end cards back down into the realm of the consumer and reality, as the 295X2 and Titan Z nonsense is of little interest to your average PC gamer.
The only thing that AMD need to worry about is that the 780Ti and its counterparts have been on the market for a while now, surely Nvidia will have cooked up their own fresh batch of hardware by then? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
