A series of recent trademark filings suggest AMD has a host of new products incoming. While the filings – spotted by WCCFTech – include a handful of familiar names, they also feature up to five brand new products.
AMD filed the following trademarks during March 2017:
RX Vega, Threadripper, and Epyc all refer to known forthcoming products, while Zenso is the name of the familiar circular Zen logo. Kyzen, Aragon, Pharos, Promethean, and CoreAmp, though are brand new.
We can divine a little information about the trademarks from their name alone:
The most obvious inference is that Kyzen refers to a new Zen-based processor, à la Ryzen. But what about the rest? To work this out, we have to look at the origins of the words.
AMD has already demonstrated a penchant for CPU monikers related to ancient Greece – think Athlon and Sempron – so Promethean could be a new microprocessor.
Another Greek connection: Pharos was the name given to the Great Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Another new CPU, perhaps?
Aragon is most recognised as the name of an autonomous community in Spain. If this is AMD’s reference point, does the name point to some kind of AI system? That, or AMD’s engineers are big Brian Eno fans.
A term invented by AMD, presumably. CoreAmp likely refers to some kind of clocking or monitoring utility.
Whether any of these mystery names turn out to be brands or just codenames remains to be seen. Hopefully, we’ll find out more during AMD’s Computex 2017 appearance. Computex 2017 runs from 30th May to 3rd June in Taipei.
