New Data Shows NVIDIA Dominating AMD in the Discrete GPU Segment

There used to be a time when AMD and NVIDIA were neck-in-neck when it came to selling discrete GPUs, but the sad truth is that AMD doesn’t seem to be able to put up a fight anymore. According to a new market-share graph released by Mercury Research, it looks like NVIDIA is pulling way ahead of AMD in the discrete GPU segment, as it leaped from 77% in Q1 2015 to 82% in Q2 2015. On the other side, AMD has dropped from 23% to just 18%, which basically means that 4 out of 5 PC users are now using NVIDIA graphics cards instead of AMD ones.

For many of you, this news might not come as a surprise at all. However, the drop is somewhat alarming considering the fact that AMD has just released its FuryX GPU, which came with its fare share of innovations, particularly as far as memory is concerned. Unfortunately, as it was not able to keep up with the GTX 980Ti in some scenarios, it seems that gamers preferred to remain or even swap over to the green team, and while this is definitely good for NVIDIA, it’s not exactly ideal for consumers. Competition is what drives innovation and cheaper prices, which is why I’m still hoping that AMD will somehow manage to pull itself back on a more respectable position on the market.
