New game from Psychonauts Dev is completely fan funded

Double Fine Productions, the studio founded by Monkey Island, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango creator Tim Schafer is to create a new adventure game funded entirely by fans.

The studio is using Kickstarter, a funding platform where users can pitch an idea to the public, which in turn donates money to get the project off the ground. Double Fine aims to raise $400,000.

At the time of writing this story the pledged amount has reached $355,301, with a total of 7,834 backers and 33 days still left to go.

The entire development process will be captured by 2 Player Productions and edited into a documentary for those who donate to watch.

On the project page, it reads:

“Over a six-to-eight month period, a small team under Tim Schafer’s supervision will develop Double Fine’s next game, a classic point-and-click adventure. Where it goes from there will unfold in real time for all the backers to see.

2 Player Productions will be documenting the creative process and releasing monthly video updates exclusively to the Kickstarter backers. This documentary series will strive to make the viewer as much a part of the process as possible by showing a game grow from start to finish, with all the passion, humor, and heartbreak that happens along the way. Double Fine is committed to total transparency with this project, ensuring it is one of the most honest depictions of game development ever conceived.”

Significant donations will be rewarded with extra special gifts such as dinner with Tim Schafer and key members of the dev team; an Undoctored picture of Ron Gilbert smiling; or becoming an actual character in the game. You’ll have to pledge upwards of $15,000 for that though.

Schafer is also believed to be in talks with Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson about making Psychonauts 2.
