Gears of War is an incredibly popular franchise. Many would, without much argument, put it on the same level as Halo and Half-Life for character-driven shooting games.
Despite those lofty heights, after the most recent title (Gears of War 4) Microsoft had been suspiciously quiet about the future of the franchise. It had even led many to speculate that the 4th instalment could be the final.
That’s not to say that GoW 4 was bad. Quite the contrary, it was excellent, albeit with some slight issues. For PC owners, one of the biggest issues was the file size to which a patch was released to reduce it from about 120gb to about 90gb.
Fans of the series, however, do have a reason to be cheerful. In a report via DSOgaming, Microsoft’s head of gaming, Phil Spencer, has dropped a pretty enormous hint that there is a future for Gears of War.
In regards to Gears of War and other Microsoft games, Phil Spencer said: “We will follow through with State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3, and the rest of our portfolio. Not just those games, but our future Halos, our future Gears of War, future Forzas, and other games. Our plan is to launch those to our Game Pass subscribers at the same time they go to retail.”
There are a few critical points to take from that. Firstly Halos and Forzas are mentioned in the plural, Gears of War is not. Gears of War is conspicuously in the singular which could suggest that what comes next might be the final instalment.
Additionally, it’s also unclear as to what the game will be, or more accurately, when. Will it be a sequel, a prequel or perhaps indeed an unassociated sidequel?
The positive news remains, however, that a new GoW game is on the way. The downside is, it might be the last.
