OEM manufacturers of USB 3.0 PCIe add in cards are preparing a new wave of cards based on an updated version of the standard USB 3.0 chipset. These cards take advantage of a new chipset from Renesas (who make USB 3.0 controller and chipset solutions on a vast scale). The new Renesas μPD720202 is apparently more cost-effective and offers up to a 40% boost in performance over the previous generation μPD720200A controller which it succeeds. It’s also undergoing a degree of modernisation by removing the old 4-pin Molex and Berg connectors and replacing those with an up to date 15-pin SATA power connector. The card has a redesigned circuit that reduces electrical leakage when in power-saving mode, when the chip consumes about 4.5 mW.
Each new USB3.0R-P2-PCIe card will offer up two USB 3.0 ports and with a newly designed PCB they will offer half height and full height PCIe designs which will suit both normal and low profile systems. They should be due out by the end of February and initial costs are around £19.50 per unit (2500 Japanese Yen). The cards will connect via PCIe 1X slots (compatible with PCIe 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0).
