New Google Earth To Be Unveiled On April 18

Google has sent out invitations for a launch event scheduled for April 18, celebrating the unveiling of a “new Google Earth”. The once powerful software has somewhat been pushed to the sidelines in favor of Google maps, which incorporates some aspects of Google Earth and has grown to be a staple application. The search engine giant did not elaborate further on what exactly will be unveiled on April 18, but teases that the event “will provide a first look at the brand new experience” just in time for Earth Day.

Five months ago, Google Earth became available for HTC Vive users and the new version could include the announcement of VR support being ported to Google’s own Daydream VR platform. This is good news for many since the $49 Daydream VR is a much more affordable alternative than the HTC Vive. With virtual reality integration, users can conveniently go into “world tours” and experience a different kind of traveling without the hassle of actually packing a bag and booking a flight or paying for anything. With a virtual reality headset on, users can go on street levels and navigate foreign lands without fear, armed only with curiousity.

Whatever the changes may be, it is big enough to warrant having a celebratory announcement event so it is definitely going to be a big update considering most update events in Google Earth’s life received little to no fanfare. All will be revealed on April 18 so everyone just has to wait and see.
