Nvidia is busy working away behind closed doors to develop its replacement to the Fermi architecture. The current generation of graphics processors are based on a 40nm manufacturing process and have started to hit a performance wall. Whereas, the new 28nm process being developed based on the “Kepler” core is expected to provide much better performance with an improved number of transistors per unit area and better performance per watt as indicated by the graph at the bottom.
Projections for the introduction of Kepler graphics cards are variable, some say the end of this year or at some point during Q4 of 2011, but most agree that it won’t be available on the market until early to mid 2012. AMD is also working away at the same advancements and is expected to release its 28nm video cards next year too.
