Generally speaking, game to film adaptations are rarely good. Resident Evil (the first film) is perhaps the only instance which manages to give a somewhat entertaining film while being reasonably faithful to the material.
In 1993 we were ‘treated’ to the Mario Bros. film. Starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and even Dennis Hopper. Despite this reasonably A-list casting, the film bombed miserably. There are various factors as to why that is, watching it (if you dare) will give you a clue. Just to put things into context, Bob Hoskins is reputed to have said in an interview that it was the worst film he ever worked on and to get through it he and John Leguizamo had to regularly get drunk.
Move forward 24 years and a new Mario film has never seen the light of day. This, despite a number of excellent games including the most recent Mario Odyssey.
It should, however, be noted that the 1993 film gave a massive hint to a sequel in the ending. A sequel which never came. It’s perhaps for the best.
Well, that might be about to change as a report by DigitalSpy suggests one might be in the works.
There is some good news in this regard. Firstly, it’s not a sequel. Despite the gap in the time, the fact that Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hooper both being dead now doesn’t help matters much (I don’t count their death as part of the good news by the way).
It seems that Nintendo wishes to ditch the whole ‘live-action’ style, instead of looking towards animation.
The best news, however, comes in who might be making it. Reports suggest that Nintendo have approach Illumination Studios about making a new film. This, the studio behind the excellent Despicable Me and Minions films.
So, if there is to be a new film, it has every chance of being half-decent.
