New Microsoft Surface Go Holiday Ad Goes After Apple’s iPad

Is the iPad for Babies?
Microsoft has released a new Holiday-themed video advert for their latest Surface Go 2018 tablet. However, this one is not quite as cheery or friendly. In fact, it actually takes direct swipes at the iPad and pokes fun at Apple’s expense.
The commercial itself is only 30 seconds long with a 10-year old girl singing to her grandma about Christmas. The song is in the tune of ‘Grandma Got Run over by a Reindeer’ by Elmo & Patsy. With the lyrics changed about how much the girl wants a Surface Go.
The opening salvo immediately takes a shot at apple. “Grandma don’t run out and buy an iPad, (t’was) fine when I was 6 but now I’m 10. My dreams are big, so I need a real computer” the jingle hums along.

The last line is also a dig at Apple’s ‘What a Computer’ ad campaign, purporting its supposed computing power. Unlike the iPad’s A10 Fusion Core, the Surface Go uses uses Intel‘s dual-core Pentium Gold 4415Y with Hyper-Threading. Although the Surface Go currently has a costlier base model ($350 vs $399).
Has Microsoft Done This Before?
Microsoft taking a swipe at Apple is nothing new. They have done this before with previous similar product comparisons. For the most part, Apple seems to take them in stride. Either way, the resulting videos and parodies never ceases to entertain.
Then again, it is hard not to when Apple makes ads like these:
