New Nvidia technologies detailed

More details come in from the new Kepler GPUs, mostly due to its approaching release making the fans impatient. Nvidia is bringing three new technologies that are set to become the star and help the company win the first round.

These three technologies are TXAA, Adaptive V-Sync and the new 3D Vision Surround. The first one is rather familiar as it was already reported yesterday, this time is official; TXAA is indeed a new anti-aliasing algorithm that offers image quality comparable to 16X MSAA, with the performance-penalty of 2X MSAA. The second one, Adaptive V-Sync, is a smart frame-rate limiter while the last one, the new 3D Vision Surround, will allow for multiple monitors to be connected to a single GPU.

Starting with TXAA, it finally turns out to be a super-efficient temporal anti-aliasing algorithm that is composed of two levels: TXAA1 and TXAA2. The first level, TXAA1, is set to provide an image quality similar to the 16X MSAA while dragging the performance to 2X MSAA level only. The second level, TXAA2, goes further than 16X MSAA in terms of image quality while offering a performance-penalty equal to 4X MSAA. Since not a lot of games support the latter natively, it will have to be enable through the Nvidia Control Panel.

Adaptive V-Sync, as stated, is a smart frame-rate limiter. This technology helps in fluidly adjusting the frame-rate during heavy 3D scenes where the frame-rate drops below or above monitor refresh-rate. When the former occurs (frame-rate is lower than monitor refresh-rate) lag is created and overclocking attempts to overcome it. As for the latter (frame-rate is higher) page-tearing is found but this time the normal functionality of V-Sync takes over. All in all, Adaptive V-Sync makes these transitions more “organic”.

Finally, there’s the new 3D Vision Surround which brings a new design to multi-display. Previously restricted to two displays, this new technologies now allows for up to four monitors to be connected on a single Kepler GPU by enabling 3-monitor HD 3D Vision Surround setups. This new 3D Vision Surround is said to work with Adaptive V-Sync to have the centre display equipped with a higher frame-rate at the expense of the two side displays. This is due to your centre display being mostly the one you’re focusing on while the two other being more or a peripheral vision.
