New Polls Suggest UK And Canada Support Snowden’s Actions, USA Is More Divided

A new survey on public opinion for Edward Snowden by Angus Reid Global Survey, published via the Huffington Post, suggests that the general public in the United Kingdom and Canada overwhelmingly support the actions of Edward Snowden in leaking large amounts of data that have revealed government surveillance abuses. The data suggests 67% of Canadians support him, while 60% of Brits do too. In the USA the opinion polls are more divided as 51% support Snowden but 40% think he is a traitor.

Interestingly the likelihood to support or condemn Snowden’s actions has both political and age related dimensions. In the USA under 35s largely support Snowden’s actions while over 55s largely called him a traitor. In the UK there are huge political, not age, divisions on the topic with Conservatives largely against Snowden’s actions and Labour or Liberal Democrat supporters largely supporting them. That UK political division has been reflected in the way that conservative media (like the Daily Mail and the Telegraph) have been critical of The Guardian and Glenn Greenwald for all the published Snowden leaks.
