New PS5 Update Adds Animated Backgrounds to the Console
There has been no official announcement yet, but it seems that Sony is slowly rolling out a new minor update for PS5 that adds a set of animated backgrounds for the console’s Welcome Hub.
This is not a full global rollout for the PS5 update, but rather a selective distribution, as only a few players have shared their experiences online through sources like Reddit and X (thanks PlayStation Lifestyle). Players who received this update can see a system notification informing them of the addition of new animated, video game-themed backgrounds for their console. So far, it seems that this is the only change brought by the update.
Animated Backgrounds for Different Games
There has been no communication yet about the return of the 30th Anniversary themes, which were previously released for PS5 to celebrate Sony’s historic milestone, only to be removed later. Many users have been asking for these to be made available again.
Some of the new animated backgrounds on PS5 have been revealed in screenshots. Other players have also reported seeing the update, indicating that it’s starting to spread more widely. Players who received the update now have access to animated backgrounds for games like Days Gone Remastered, Ghost of Yotei, Ghost of Tsushima, Demon’s Souls, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon, and others. Previously, only an animated theme for Astro Bot was available.
To check if you’ve received the update, go to the Welcome Hub, click on the Backgrounds tab, and select “Games.” You can also manually check for system feature updates through the console’s menu.
This type of update is managed separately from system firmware updates and does not require a specific file download.
