New SD Card Class Can Support Minimum Speeds of 90MB/Sec

SD cards are becoming more impressive as the years go by in terms of capacity but also in speed. Sources indicate that the governing body behind memory card standards, namely the SD Association, has recently unveiled a brand new speed class that was designed specifically from the ground up to cope with the incredible demands of 4K, 8K, 3D and 360-degree video recordings. Dubbed Video Speed Class, this range is a part of the SD 5.0 specification, and it is currently the absolute fastest speed class to date, as it is able to provide real-time multi-file recording for the highest available video resolutions.

To be more specific, we’re talking about minimum sequential write speeds of 6MB/sec for a V6 card and 90MB/sec for a V90 card. According to the association, V6, V10 and V30 cards should be good enough for 1080p and 4K resolution content while the more impressive (and more expensive) V60 and V90 cards should be used by those of you who plan to shoot 8K video. So far, the absolute fastest cards that are a part of the UHS Speed Class managed to achieve minimum sequential write speeds of 30MB/sec, which definitely puts things in perspective. It’s true that there are plenty of SD cards currently available that boast write speeds of up to 95MB/sec, but it’s worth noting that these are “best-case scenarios” and not guaranteed speeds. The new Video Speed Class features “minimum sequential write speeds,” which is a completely different story.
