New Sony Xperia Flagship Device May Not Make MWC 2017

Rumours have been circulating about a successor to Sony’s Z5 Premium for a while, but any new Sony Xperia flagship device may not make a MWC 2017 appearance as previously thought.

Although little is known for definite about the new flagship phone, speculation suggests they’ll continue with their new X branding, which of course replaced their Z lineup, with most suggestions pointing to the new line being the X2 range.

The new supposed X2 premium flagship phone is set to boast a 4k display and the new Snapdragon 835 processor. However, Samsung’s upcoming S8 smartphone will also feature this processor, which explains in part why Sony may have to delay the MWC unveiling.

It is said that Samsung have all but swallowed up the Snapdragon 835 supply, meaning Sony will have very few devices ready, and may delay any launch date they may have had planned. This means that if they do plan on unveiling the device at MWC 2017, it will likely be a more behind closed doors affair rather than a public display. Speculation suggests we’re likely to see the new X2 devices this summer at the earliest.

Although their MWC press conference may lack their flagship product, it is expected they will unveil 3 or 4 other X2 devices, and will hopefully allow people hands-on access. More details about the devices should then be readily available from multiple sources for those who are interested in what Sony have to offer.

Features such as the fingerprint sensor in the power button and the metal back (previously glass) will likely stay, as well as USB type C. Screen size is rumoured to be between 5-5.2″, and will have a resolution of 4k.

We won’t know much more about the new devices until at least MWC 2017, barring any major leaks from reputable sources. Without any clear-cut information it is hard to confirm exactly what the devices will offer, and how many devices there will be. Reports suggest up to 5 devices, let’s hope Sony shed some light on this during Mobile World Congress 2017.

Do you own a Sony device? Would you be tempted to switch from Apple or Samsung if their new devices are competitive?
