Even Disney is getting into the VR and AR craze with their new Jedi Challenges AR headset. Unlike other AR or VR reality devices in the market however, this one is specifically for gaming and is the best “Jedi simulator” yet. It actually comes with a lightsaber controller which can be swung like a real one in-game versus an actual Sith.
The Jedi Challenges AR kit is built by Lenovo in partnership with Disney. It actually features two other game modes other than the main lightsaber wielding version. One is an AR strategy game which lets players control units ala StarCraft but in the comfort of their living room with the lightsaber controller. Unlike StarCraft which is 2D on the screen however, this strategy game is in full AR 3D . The large scale combat is a lot more engaging when you can actually see the units move in your living room.
The other game is specifically for hardcore Star Wars fans. It is the Dejarik holochess game that Chewbacca was playing in the original Star Wars: A New Hope movie. Users can move holographic pieces on a real-life board. The development required close consultation with Lucasfilm in order for the game to be lore-correct, so as to keep fans happy.
The Star Wars: Jedi Challenges is available for pre-order starting September 1st directly from Lenovo’s website. It costs $199.99 USD and will begin shipping in November. Just before the holiday season kicks in.
