Microsoft has announced that a new version of Windows 10 is to be released. This update to the operating system is designed to handle the high-end systems to which the operating system is currently struggling to optimize towards.
What, however, does Microsoft mean by high-end?
Well, we’re not talking Threadripper processors. Although you can read about those here. Microsoft feels that the current Windows 10 Pro does not offer enough support or compatibility for high-end server style systems.
The announcement, via TechPowerUp, has announced that Microsoft, with the new version of Windows, will be adding additional support to Windows 10 to include:
At present, Windows 10 can only manage 2 processors and 2TB of memory. Therefore the change is quite significant and a step in addressing the increasing demands of workstation and server computers.
It’s certainly a bit more of a technical leap story than the cancellation of Paint.
Short answer? Probably nothing. Not unless you run your own server or have a ridiculously overpowered workstation.
Microsoft has said that the new version of the operating system is designed to offer: “support for server grade PC hardware and is designed to meet demanding needs of mission critical and compute intensive workloads”.
That being said, I am not personally aware of any Threadripper dual-socket motherboards coming to the market and as such, the 4 processor support seems a little pie-in-the-sky at present. Then again, the sheer thought of 6TB of RAM is obscene to me. Makes the 32gb I have in my home system seem rather pathetic.
While many of us are eagerly anticipating the release of the Fall update, I daresay this will be good news to some.
For most of us mere mortals, however, we’ll probably benefit from this without ever knowing.
