It’s common knowledge that some subway stations in New York City have Wi-Fi access, but it looks like the city’s entire subway system will benefit from wireless internet connectivity in 2016. The news was delivered by State governor Andrew Cuomo, who promised that all subway commuters will be able to enjoy some sort of internet access while they are waiting for their trains to arrive. The next big step would be to implement complete cellular coverage, but we shouldn’t expect to see that happening until early 2017. Cuomo has more plans to make the lives of New York commuters easier, as he also wants to introduce a contactless payment system that would allow them to pay for their fares using new bank cards or smartphones.
Users will also receive up to date information regarding trains and buses, including real-time arrival data and countdown clocks. USB charging ports will also be added to subway cars while newly delivered buses will be equipped with Wi-Fi hotspots. All of these additions will make it easier to stay online in NYC, particularly when you’re traveling to or from work. It certainly sounds like the city’s leadership is taking important steps to modernize its transit system, and that’s always a good thing in my book.
