Next Nintendo Console Could be Powered by an AMD Chip

Nintendo looks set to follow the lead of both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in adopting an AMD chip to power its next console.

Although sales have improved over the last 18 months, the Wii U has failed to make the desired impact, and Nintendo visionary Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed the company is working on its next console. The announcement coincided with AMD boasting about a big collaborative coup.

The CFO of AMD, Devinder Kumar, revealed some intriguing details at a recent conference, saying, “I will say that one is x86 and the other is ARM, and at least one will be beyond gaming, right […] They [the customers] are going to announce it and then […] you will find out that it is AMD’s APU that is being used in those products.”

Shigeru Miyamoto told the Associated Press, “While we’re busy working on software for the Wii U, we have production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be.”

Nintendo have hinted over the last six months that it has been working on a new console, thought to be a cheaper model aimed at emerging markets, like India and China. It is not yet clear if this cheaper console and the new system Miyamoto spoke of are one and the same.
