Game developer EIDOS Montreal is well-known for their rich single player experiences. Their most popular recent games include the Deus Ex series and Tomb Raider. Now the company has released a statement stating that they will be “strengthening (their) core foundations” by incorporating more online experiences. Not just a simple addition like an add-on, but rather placing “an added emphasis” on online gaming. The statement comes directly from EIDOS Montreal’s head of studio David Anfossi. “Through the inherent interactivity of online play, our universes will have the chance to thrive both now and into the future”, he adds.
EIDOS has attempted incorporating online gaming to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided before. This was a game mode “Breach” eventually became a free to play game. Now they are hiring more online-specific programmers to get the job done right.
The studio is building teams up to build and strengthen their online play components. “On the tech side, we’re working to empower our content creators and promote an iterative game creation process” says Sebastien Bessette, EIDOS’ Director of Online Technology. Adding online gaming means the company has to restructure their proprietary DAWN engine. This would allow it to properly interface with modern online solutions.
EIDOS is hiring several programmers specifically for this implementation. Their website currently lists lead multiplayer, senior gameplay and senior online programmer positions. The senior online programmer position specifically is for console game development. Meanwhile, the lead programmer multiplayer position would be handling integration of PlayStation network, Xbox live and Steam services.
Some of EIDOS Montreal’s rumoured upcoming games include the next Tomb Raider game (possibly titled Shadow of the Tomb Raider), and a Guardians of the Galaxy game.
