Next Xbox to boast powerful 16-core CPU (rumour)

Another rumour has landed this week, but if it turns out to be true this could be a big game changer, quite literally in this case.

There are reports that Durango devkits were shipped to developers last month, just after the “secret” meetings with Microsoft took place in London, while they won’t resemble the final hardware in terms of appearance, more likely a PowerPC setup with target hardware specifications, the kits are said to be powered by a state of the art 16-core IBM Power PC CPU, with a graphics processor that is on par with AMDs HD 7000 range, which is again a rumour, but nearly all rumours start with a spark of truth, much like Chinese whispers if anything else, so there is a little truth here and there if you listen hard enough.

Having a 16 core CPU would be earth shattering in terms of performance, something that isn’t even mainstream for even the most high-end of PCs, after all AMD only launced their 16 core technology last November for the business market.

There is a good change the hardware for Microsoft’s next gen console won’t appear at E3 in June, especially with sales of current gen hardware still going strong, but XBW’s sources say that many developers are working around the clock just encase Microsoft or Sony for that matter decide to make a final push this year, obviously the developers are keen to show off all their hard work to world, lets just hope the world is ready for it.
