Nielsen is looking beyond the television screen and into the eSports scene as they launch a new research and consulting group. Known mostly for their television ratings, Nielsen aims to deliver global research on various aspects of eSports including sponsorship valuation and audiences. Their years of experience will also translate to the business in the form of consulting services as well.
The company has created an advisory board specifically for this new venture. It includes various representatives from ESL, FIFA, MLG, Activision Blizzard, NBA 2K League, the Next Level, Sony PlayStation, and Unilever. It also includes large established media platforms such as ESPN, Facebook, YouTube, Turner, Twitch and Twitter.
Ca$hing in on the eSports Craze
It is impossible to ignore how big the eSports market is. So it is foolish for companies not to make a move and take advantage of the situation. The projections for the business growth is also quite incredible with expectations of 41% increase to $696 million in 2017. By estimates, this is going to reach $1.5B in just three years. Just the audience alone is projected to grow from 191 million in 2017 to 286 million within the same time frame, according to Amsterdam-based research firm Newzoo.
