The NES Classic was a brilliant idea, re-create the look of the original, add 30 great classic games onto a small flash drive and make money! Well, clearly Nintendo have decided that they do not love or need money anymore as it was announced yesterday that they will be discontinuing production of the NES Classic after just 6 months.
The NES Classic has had a short, but incredibly turbulent lifespan. Since it’s release on November 10th last year, Nintendo continually failed to meet the demand on the system, it perhaps wasn’t the greatest idea tying in production so close to their Switch (which ironically also has supply issues).
In a statement to IGN Nintendo said “NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product,” and as such production will end so that Nintendo can presumably put their full effort behind the Switch.
I consider myself really fortunate that I received one for Christmas and in truth, it was a brilliant idea. It was a great way to play some of the classic games on the big TV again.
True, the NES Classic does have its faults, the game catalogue it came with, although good, was missing some notable titles and the length of the controller leads was woefully poor.
That being said, it’s incredible that only 6 months after it’s launch, Nintendo is saying goodbye to the NES Classic.
The only potential ray of sunshine is that this could indicate that Nintendo may consider a similar product for the Super Nintendo in the future, however, the frankly bizarre decision to end production whilst there is still demand is baffling.
