Nintendo Files Lawsuit Against Switch Pirates on Reddit

Nintendo has launched a crackdown on platforms like Reddit and Discord, targeting individuals involved in piracy. The Japanese company’s legal team is currently pursuing action against James “Archbox” Williams, who is accused of selling pirated games, and they have no plans to stop there.

Nintendo Takes Legal Action Against Piracy on Reddit and Discord

Nintendo Files Lawsuit Against Switch Pirates on Reddit

According to a new legal document (thanks Nintendo Everything), Nintendo has discovered that others in James “Archbox” Williams’ network have been promoting the use of pirated software across multiple online platforms, including Name Cheap, GoDaddy, Tucows, Cloudflare, Github, Discord, Google, and Reddit. The company has initiated a comprehensive investigation to stop these activities and warn those involved of potential legal consequences. Here’s what Nintendo had to say:

Reddit, Inc. operates a social media platform where users, often using pseudonyms, may post to different forums known as communities or “subreddits.” Defendant was a primary moderator of the SwitchPirates community, under the name “Archbox,” which boasted more than 190,000 members. Nintendo has reason to believe that other accounts active in the SwitchPirates community may also have been controlled by Defendant, or else reflect other individuals who have worked alongside Defendant. The purpose of all of the requested subpoenas is to seek relevant information that is necessary for NOA to pursue infringement claims.

Investigation Targets James “Archbox” Williams and His Network

While there are no specific legal cases yet, given Nintendo’s legal team’s track record, it’s only a matter of time before those linked to James “Archbox” Williams are identified. If these individuals cease sharing pirated software, the case may not escalate further. However, more severe actions could be taken if the situation persists. We’ll have to wait and see how Nintendo’s crackdown on piracy unfolds.
