Nintendo Game Boy Rumoured to Get ‘Classic’ Treatment Next

After the success of the Nintendo NES and SNES Classic, it appears that the Japanese company is eyeing to revive its first handhold console next. Rumours are circulating in Japan that the next mini-version is the Gameboy Classic. Clues to its development surface when new trademark filings regarding the handheld console surfaced. It actually came directly from a Twitter Bot that informs the public of recent filings called Trademark Bot.

Nintendo Game Boy Classic Trademark Application

The trademark application was sent recently on September 15, 2017. It includes the use of graphics and likeness of the classic. It does not explicitly say that new hardware is coming. Although it appears to be a de facto likeness trademark protection application. This move is usual for upcoming product releases so as to prevent knock-offs from profiting. Also to prevent other similar products from coming out before it reaches the market. A similar filing also apparently for the Nintendo 64 surfaced in Europe last year according to US gamer.

The original Game Boy came out in Japan on April 21, 1989 and began selling in Europe a year later on September 28, 1990. It came with Tetris as the default game bundle and only had a black and white screen, similar to Game & Watch games.
