While there have been many rumours over the years that the N64 classic, GoldenEye 007, might have been getting a remake or remaster, to date I think most of you have probably noticed that nothing ever came of all that talk (and there has undoubtedly been a lot of it particular over the last 5 years!). – The best we’ve typically seen have been fan projects which, as fan projects generally tend to do, never come to release fruition. – Following an official Twitter post by Nintendo, however, there is some very exciting and official news from the world of GoldenEye 007.
No, it’s not a remake, nor a remaster per se, but GoldenEye 007 is officially heading to the Nintendo Switch with online multiplayer enabled!
Although Nintendo has been somewhat vague on the details, this isn’t a hoax or elaborate prank. Nintendo has officially confirmed that GoldenEye 007 is coming to the Switch Store with online multiplayer functionality! – And better still, Rare has also confirmed that a soft-remake of the title will also be shortly heading to Xbox Game Pass offering 4K resolution! Albeit, in regards to this version, the status of online play is still unclear.
What about the game itself though? Well, again, pending confirmation, it does appear that in specific regards to the Nintendo Switch version this will be pretty much a straight-up port of the original N64 version. In other words, don’t expect too much in the way on enhanced graphics.
The bottom line though is after years of asking, GoldenEye 007 is coming back!
While GoldenEye 007 is undoubtedly one of the most iconic games ever released, my personal opinion of it is that it has aged rather poorly. What was truly and legitimately revolutionary back in 1997 now feels mostly unresponsive and clunky. By and large, unless the Switch controls come in to help assist the aiming, this might act as a reminder to people that what they didn’t necessarily love was the game, but more the memories they had with it.
While it is, of course, great to see this back and particularly so on the Nintendo Switch, I think my eye is more firmly landing on the Xbox Game Pass version which does at least seem to be getting a pretty significant overhaul rather than some kind of emulated port.
Let’s be honest though, all we’re waiting on now is a release date and with Rare and Nintendo only giving us a ‘coming soon’ for the moment, GoldenEye 007 would definitely represent a great Christmas gift for 2022!
