Once again Nintendo is pushing its legal weight around as they have reportedly issued a DMCA takedown for a Nintendo Switch Homebrew project.
According to gbatemp.net The tool that Nintendo has issued a DMCA takedown for is Lockpick, which is a tool that allows users to dump unique keys from their Nintendo Switch console allowing them to use various hacking-related programs and emulators. The tool does this by bypassing the console’s TPMs which prevent the access and extraction of cryptographic keys. The DMCA was revealed by Simon Aarons on Twitter who highlights that users use this tool on their own Nintendo Switch console and Nintendo issuing the DMCA takedown is “ludicrous”. Following this news, Skyline Emulator, a switch emulator for Android devices announced on their discord server that they would be shutting down development as the emulator relied on Lockpick to function.
The fans once again aren’t happy with this with many echoing the same statement of they own the console they can do whatever they like with the console including using homebrew tools. Many see that this case could be fought and have a very solid ground to stand upon but unfortunately, it is Nintendo and fighting them requires a lot of money and time which I doubt the people behind Lockpick have.
