Despite Wolfenstein II and AC: Origins launching next week, the most anticipated game this year is actually Super Mario Odyssey. It is the largest Nintendo Mario title release since 2013’s Super Mario 3D World. In fact, development on the project began in 2014. Plus, even before its October 27 release, Odyssey has already garnered 12 awards and is expected to win several more after.
The structure of the game lends itself to the portability of the Switch. This means players can choose to play it in bursts, or choose long marathon gaming sessions and still enjoy it. Moreover, unlike more recent Mario games, Odyssey specifically caters to the hardcore Super Mario fan base. It continues that time-honoured tradition of rescuing Princess Peach once again from Bowser. This time however, Bowser intends to take over the Mushroom Kingdom by forcing the princess into marriage.
Joining Mario in his quest this time is Cappy, a creature from the Land of Hats who acts as Mario’s signature headwear. In fact, Cappy is featured in the official logo. He is also essential to the gameplay mechanics, enabling Mario to do certain tricks. Watch the two trailers below to see what you can expect from the gameplay.
Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch will be available in retail stores on October 27 for £41.99.
