Nintendo Responds to New Wii U Console Hack

“Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security, however, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode. Nintendo continuously monitors all threats to its products’ security and will use technology and will take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy.”

Those were the words of Nintendo when speaking to Eurogamer about the first alleged Wii U hack to run commercial games. Wiikey is the group responsible for said hack, which is said to emulate the optical drive and allow you to play anything through a USB device.

“Yes, its real, We have now completely reversed the WiiU drive authentification, disk encryption, file system, and everything else needed for this next generation K3y. Stay tuned for updates!”

This hack is more akin to the 360 hack then the PS3 one. The 360 was also a hack of the optical drive rather then the PS3 which was fully reversed-engineered.

Right now this is a battle for Nintendo and they could release a firmware update to break this. The question then becomes what did this group specifically do, and how much do they know? Not only could the WiiKey group perhaps issue their own firmware updates, but so could other hackers. It really all depends how deep the access goes into the system with this hack. For the moment we can’t tell but WiiKey did issue a response to Nintendo, posting these lines of code, whatever they mean:

57 55 50 2D 50 2D 41 52 50 50 2D 30 30 2D 31 30
31 45 55 52 2D 32 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

If anyone understands the codes above, please leave a comment and let us know whats going on here.
