Nintendo Switch Apparently Has 4GB of RAM

The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid home console/tablet device which launches in March next year. While the initial trailer answered some questions regarding the form factor, questions remain about the unit’s power. After the brief teaser, it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch will be using NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture in the form of a custom Tegra chip. Beyond this, there haven’t been any more technical details and further information should be disclosed during an event on January 12th. Saying that, Emily Rogers who is known to have usually credible sources seems fairly confident that the Nintendo Switch will use 4GB of RAM. This is double the amount Nintendo included with the Wii U.

Given the amount of RAM on current consoles like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, this has resulted in some people questioning if the device’s memory is enough:

As you can see, it appears Nintendo is deploying 4GB of RAM to maintain an enticing price point and ensure the product has mass market appeal. Also, the compact form-factor has to be taken into account and it’s unfair to compare the specification to larger consoles. While the memory amount isn’t overly impressive, it should be ample given the console’s focus as a hybrid unit which isn’t trying to outperform rival platforms in the performance department.
