It’s always great to hear a fresh joke and Nintendo claiming that they over-supplied the Switch is certainly a good one. There is just one problem, in yet another faux pas with the community, this isn’t a joke. Nintendo is being dead serious. They honestly believe that they have “over-delivered” on the Switch. I’ll give you a moment to stop choking, laughing or crying. I’m not sure which is the appropriate response.
In a report via GameSpot, Nintendo has claimed that the Switch was “over-delivered”. Nope, repeating it still doesn’t make it less bizarre.
Now, please don’t get me wrong, I am a massive fan of the Switch. You also cannot deny that the console is a massive commercial success. I would never, however, have expected anyone to claim that the Nintendo Switch was oversupplied. Frankly, stock levels are still below demand. So what on earth does Nintendo base this claim on exactly?
Well, they base this argument on the point that by the end of the year they expect 10,000,000 units to be sold. As such, meeting demand to sell that many units were well above their own expectations. While I agree that there is some merit in this, it does also highlight a hilariously self-deprecating point, they clearly didn’t expect the Nintendo Switch to sell this well. Therefore, the oversupply is based on Nintendo’s own conservative estimates of sales.
Such claims by Nintendo wouldn’t be so hilarious, or annoying, if the company didn’t have a clear history of this. Yes, the Nintendo Switch is outselling the PS4 and Xbox One, but supply is clearly nowhere near demand. This is almost exactly the same as what we saw with the NES classic. Nintendo massively underestimated the demand, they didn’t meet supply and they blamed everything except themselves for it.
That being said, even the CEO of Pokemon thought the Switch would flop.
It really isn’t difficult Nintendo, people want this stuff and the more you make, the more of it will sell. Better still, if you make more of it quickly, you can charge higher prices as it’s still new!
With SNES classics set to be released on the 29th, it’s clear that once again, demand is higher than supply. I luckily have had mine on pre-order for some time, that being said, I still have my doubts if I’ll actually get it this week.
