The Nintendo Switch Hidden Golf Game Has Been Removed

Nintendo Switch Hidden Golf Game

Since it’s launch in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has stormed to the top of sales. It represents one of the first major success stories Nintendo has had (excluding handheld devices) for a significant period.

What you may not have known though is that it had a hidden secret. Each Nintendo Switch contained a secret copy of the original NES 1984 Golf game. Being uncovered in September 2017, we reported how the game had secretly been buried deep within the Switch.

Buried is perhaps not the best choice of words as it was more of an Easter Egg. To access the game required a specific set of circumstances. You had to set the consoles date to July the 11th and perform a specific motion with the controllers.

By doing this, you could gain access to the hidden game. Unfortunately, however, it seems that the most recent software update has now removed this feature.

A probable tribute

It was thought for a long time that the inclusion of the game might have been a tribute to the former Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. It was he who originally programmed the game and July 11th just happens to be the day he passed away in 2015.

Nintendo have never confirmed the existence of the golf game. So it was therefore a subtle tribute or some of the programmers inserted it as an Easter egg unbeknown to the big wigs.

In a report via SwitchBrew, however, a recent overview of the new software version (4.0.0) has found that the game has subsequently been removed.

This would perhaps suggest that Nintendo wasn’t aware of its existence officially.

Either way, sad to see it go, but it was fun while it lasted.

What do you think? Did you play the golf game? Was its inclusion known officially to Nintendo or was it an Easter Egg? – Let us know in the comments!
