No Man’s Sky is Ready to Go

After being forced to delay its release by six weeks, it seems hotly anticipated space explorer No Man’s Sky is ready to go, with lead developer Sean Murray revealing that the game has is now complete.

It’s happened. No Man’s Sky just went gold,” Murray tweeted, below a photo of a Blu-Ray disc emboldened with the game’s name. “I’m so incredibly proud of this tiny team. 4 years of emotions.”

Last month, Murray was quick to stress that the extra development time allowed by the delay had been to the benefit of the game, asserting that the work of his team at Hello Games was “genuinely going well.”

The game, which allows players to explore a procedurally generated galaxy, will also have a procedurally generated soundtrack, with the music adapting to and reflecting your environment. To help create this innovative soundtrack, Hello Games approached Sheffield electro-rock outfit 65daysofstatic. The band created a number of standalone tracks for the game, coupled with a huge library of noises and sound effects, designed to merge with the music organically.

“Procedurally generated music is something we’ve been interested in for a while,” 65daysofstatic’s Paul Wolinski told Polygon. “But the way it tends to play out is that most generated stuff in computer games tends towards ambience: quite granular, soft, synthy stuff [because] the music’s never sure what action it’s about to be soundtracking.”

No Man’s Sky is set for release for PlayStation 4 and PC on 9th August.
