The upcoming AMD mega-CPU Threadripper is soon to be launched. With its release will come the new AM4 socket for X399 motherboards, and it’s big… really big. This means that the current batch of Ryzen coolers simply will not have the surface area required to mount over the new chips.
While Noctua couldn’t give us any information short of a discrete twinkle in the eye, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what they’re latest prototypes were.
As you can see (above), these look like pretty much any other Noctua cooler. The fans are what you would expect, and they have chunky heat-pipe laden cooling towers to dissipate the heat from the CPU.
Flip the coolers on their back, however, and you can see that they have a freaking huge contact plate. There’s nothing else on the market these could be for. The mounting is elongated, suggesting they’re for an AMD bracket. As you can see, they dwarf out a business card with their size.
There is a range of other prototypes on display too. These are a slightly tweaked design to offer improved performance, and while we have no release dates, a safe bet would be a launch around the end of the year.
