Nokia’s Classic 8110 “Banana Phone” Revived After 22 Years

The Banana Phone is Back!

Nokia‘s classic 8110 “Banana phone” from 1996 is relaunched at Barcelona during MWC 2018. It still features the same banana-shape curve and slide-out keypad cover design. However, it has a more modern look. It is also known of course as the “Matrix phone”, after its presence in the iconic 1999 sci-fi film by the Wachowskis. Gone is the protruding antenna. Plus, the screen is now much larger.

This of course follows the move to revive the original Nokia 3310 several months ago. Although Nokia themselves no longer make the phones, this revamped 8110 version like the 3310 is sold under license by HMD Global. Just like the original, the new 8110 can answer and end calls by sliding the cover. This new model however has 4G coverage support and has a new OS that allows for app downloads. Before you ask, yes, you can play Snake on it, now with colour.

In terms of battery life, the phone supposedly can operate up to 25 days on a single charge (standby mode). That is a long time spent with it close to your ear on a call instead of charging from the wall.

How Much is the HMD 8110?

The HDM 8110 phone has an MSRP of €79, and will be available in Banana yellow as well as black come May 2018. While you wait for the HMD 8110 to be available in stores, here’s a fitting song to pass the time.
