With the upcoming release of Nvidia’s new 40XX series of graphics cards being more of a foregone conclusion than just a rumour, the only real question was exactly when they were planning to host their launch event to reveal their new GPU series. – And, in this regard, speculation has been pretty wild with some sources citing that the launch would happen in September with others potentially speculating that Nvidia was going to hold off the 40XX until early 2023 (to allow the masses of current-gen stock they have to dwindle a little).
Following a report via TechPowerUp, however, Nvidia has confirmed that it will be hosting a keynote address at GTC 2022 on September 20th. And, in addition, they’ve dropped more than a few hints that the 40XX series, or at least the 4090, will be on the agenda!
We should note that Nvidia has not categorically stated that their GTC 2022 keynote address will include any kind of launch for their new 40XX series of graphics cards. Given that it’s to be hosted by CEO Jensen Huang, however, this guy only generally turns up for the really big stuff so it is about 99% certain that September 20th will at least see the launch of the 4090.
Why just this one graphics card though? Well, while it’s entirely possible that other models will be confirmed, it does seem (based on prior leaks) that the 4090 is going to be the first GPU from the series to be released. And based on comments by Jensen Huang, it appears that the reasoning behind this might to, effectively, create a new top of the line GPU without affecting their efforts to continue to sell 30XX models at a (hopefully) more affordable price point.
“Ampere is the most popular GPU we’ve ever created. It is in the top 15 most popular gaming GPUs on Steam. And it remains the best GPUs in the world, and it will be very successful for some time. However, we do have exciting new next-generation coming and it’s going to be layered on top of that. And so, we’ve taken—we’ve done two things. We’ve reduced sell-in to let channel inventory correct and we’ve implemented programs with our partners to price position the products in the channel in preparation for our next generation.” – Jensen Huang (conveniently ignoring the fact that the Nvidia 1060 Pascal-based GPU has been at the top of the Steam market share charts for 6 years).
With the event just a little under a month away, while Nvidia has confirmed it’s happening, they are still remaining somewhat coy on details. In something of a little speculation of our own, however, this is what we’d likely anticipate to happen:
Oh, and just in case it needed to be said, expect a lot of filler and bloat as Nvidia does tend to love to talk about AI and, basically, technologies that the vast majority of people have no interest in. All going well though, on September 20th, we’ll finally get a look at the 4090. A look which doesn’t just confirm how good it’s going to be, but hopefully how the price structure for the series is going to pan out.
For the moment though, expect just the 4090 as Nvidia still seems keen to ensure it can shift its reportedly small mountain of 30XX stock which, at the moment, just isn’t selling!
