The internet hacking sprees continues, this time Nvidia are the newest high profile name to fall victim. Nvidia have suspended their forums after suspicious activity has taken place. According to their investigation, unauthorized third parties have gained access to user information which includes usernames, email addresses, hashed passwords with random salt values and “About Me” profile information. Nvidia has officially confirmed the hack and also stated that up to 400,000 user accounts were obtained by the hackers.
The afflicted accounts belonged to users of the Nvidia forum, developer zone and research site. The company has suspended all three. Earlier the Nvidia forum web page read:
“We are employing additional security measures to minimize the impact of future attacks. All user passwords for our Forums will be reset when the system comes back online. At that time, an email with a temporary password, along with instructions on how to change it, will be sent to the user’s registered email address. As a precautionary measure, we strongly recommend that you change any identical passwords that you may be using elsewhere.”
Nvidia claims to have contacted all affected users and says that all user passwords will require a reset before the forums go live again. This yet again goes to show that company’s need to take seriously the threat of hackers. It is also disappointing to see that some of the world’s biggest companies, like Nvidia, do not face any disciplinary measures for mistakes that could cost consumers dearly.
