NVIDIA Grows to Take 3rd Spot as Largest IC Design Company

NVIDIA is having their strongest years in history with a largely unchallenged domination in the graphics card segment and expansion into other ventures. Now the big green company has overtaken MediaTek as the world’s 3rd largest IC design company. This report comes from the firm Topology Research Institute claiming that the revenues in the second quarter of 2017 reflects NVIDIA’s growth that pushes it ahead.
MediaTek, suffered on-year revenue decrease that significantly places them lower in the top 10 IC design rankings. A massive second-quarter decline of 19.9% from last year sees MediaTek down to $1.87 billion. The only other IC design company to see a decrease in Q2 2017 is Marvell with a revenue slip of 0.8% on year to $593M. The decline in MediaTek revenues is the result of poor smartphone SoC sales, stemming from earlier product strategy issues. Broadcom and Qualcomm remain solid in their first and second place at the top 10 revenue rankings. Qualcomm took home $4.05B from a 13.1% increase and Broadcom $4.37B from a 17.3% increase compared to a year prior.
Growth Fueled by Strong Demand for NVIDIA GPU in Data Centers
NVIDIA’s Q2 2017 revenue saw a massive 56.7% surge from last year up to $1.91B. This is far and away, the largest revenue increase among the top 10 fabless IC companies in Q2 2017. According to TRI, this is the result of a strong demand for data centers and professional visualization applications. NVIDIA’s lead in this segment is going to widen even further with their new Volta unveiled in May.
