On the day of the reveal, the price of the GTX 1060 from Nvidia has finally been revealed. Using the new GP106 die, the latest graphics card will reportedly offered performance similar to the GTX 980 at a lower cost. According to the leaked slides, the card will come in at $249 and $299 USD.
The split pricing reflects Nvidia’s new pricing scheme for their reference Founders Edition. In order to get the privilege of obtaining a arguably weaker card, customers will pay out an extra $50. This time, they won’t even get their cards earlier as custom cards will arrive on the same date, July 19th. This means there is no reason to get a Founders Edition unless you really like the look or want a reference card.
The price is about right considering that an AMD RX 480 comes in at about $200 and offers just over GTX 970 levels of performance. For only $50 more, potential customers will have to face a tough choice between the cards. The GTX 1060 offers worse performance per dollar but it does bring more performance to the table. The RX 480 is slower by about 8-10% but it brings better value and longevity due to DX 12. We’ll bring more information as the official reveal happens.
